Nancy Nixon Ensign

Third Generation maternal painter, great niece to Edward Willis Redfield-New Hope Impressionist.

I am mostly a studio artist, working on icongrapic commissions
and subjects of personal choice. My figurative series is the abstract reaction to my near death experience in 1994 and 1995. They have been greatly influenced by my past iconographic studies. Each figurative painting is a slice of my artistic soul merging with new techniques, mediums and ideas.

I rediscovered the love of plein air painting in the countryside. In my past travels I have painted my way through eastern and European cities. Now, in my rural hometown with the Chautauqua escarpment at my view, I have found new great pleasure in painting my surroundings and taking my paints into oncoming storms. My new storm series is a wonderful series combining plein air and studio painting. When the weather gets too rigorous, I head inside to finish up the details.
I try to capture the essence of the nearing storm, relishing its existence and beauty.

My icon paintings are constantly influenced by the timeless nature of the original images, my abstract figures float throughout their painted skin, their eyes
affixed within. I rely on my inner memory, flooded images of my past, my present, my future wishes. I continue to sell work through galleries and on commission through my studio by appointment only.
